Caring for a Child Who Faints (Syncope)

Fainting, or syncope, can be frightening but is usually not serious. Learn how to care for your child at home and when to seek emergency help.

How to Respond When Your Child Faints

Fainting, also known as syncope, can be a scary experience for both the child and the parent. Fortunately, most cases are not serious and can be safely managed at home with the right steps.

What to Do Immediately If Your Child Faints:

  • Prevent Injury:
Gently ease your child to the floor to avoid falls. For very small children, lay them face down on your lap.

  • Check for Breathing:
Place your ear near your child’s mouth to listen for breathing.

🚨 If your child is not breathing, call 911 immediately and stay on the phone.

  • Elevate the Legs:
Raise your child’s legs above chest level to improve blood flow to the brain.

  • Let Them Rest:
After regaining consciousness, have your child lie down and rest for 10–15 minutes.

  • Prevent Choking:
If your child begins to vomit, gently turn them onto their side.

  • Comfort & Hydrate:
Once fully awake, offer a glass of fruit juice and place a cool washcloth on their forehead.

  • Check for Injuries:
Look for any signs of injury that may have happened during the fall.

Preventing Future Fainting Episodes:

Help your child reduce the risk of fainting with these tips:

  • Teach them to avoid locking their knees when standing still.

  • Encourage them to stand up slowly from sitting or lying positions.

  • If feeling faint (dizzy, weak, nauseous, or warm):

    • Sit or lie down immediately.

    • Place their head between their knees if sitting.

  • Ensure they drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.

  • Avoid known triggers such as:

    • Hot weather

    • Hot tubs

    • Standing for long periods

  • Follow all medications exactly as prescribed.

Contact your doctor if you suspect the medicine may be causing dizziness or other side effects.

When to Call for Emergency Help (Call 911):

Seek immediate medical attention if:

  • Your child does not wake up quickly after fainting.

  • Your child shows any of the following signs:

    • Blurred vision

    • Numbness or tingling

    • Trouble walking or speaking

    • Confusion after regaining consciousness
